Mac Users Keep on Seeing the ‘Expected Value Line’ Pop-Up that Might Be Generated by Potential Threats

Mac users who suddenly get an alert saying “Expected Value 1, Column 1 (Character 0)” might be a little confused. The error can be completely legitimate, which sometimes occurs after installing one of the major macOS updates. However, the more common reason for seeing this pop-up seems to be the presence of PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) or other malware threats on users’ systems.
Users often do not realize when they download PUPs even though these apps might have misleading features, and sometimes their questionable features do not outweigh the apps’ benefits. PUPs tend to rely on dubious distribution methods to spread without catching users’ attention. A PUP may have an original function like displaying the weather forecast or highlighting certain words on an online document. They often come with additional functions that users are not aware of, and that may prove to be problematic. The PUP that displays the “Expected Value 1, Column 1 (Character 0)” pop-up may also collect information on your browsing habits for ad campaigns, which can often lead users to unreliable third-party websites. Getting infected with Mac malware through such websites is highly unlikely. Still, there is always a chance that you could get exposed to potentially corrupted content, and from there, you would be only a click away from a security threat.

Other types of threats that could be behind the “Expected Value of Line 1, Column 1 (Character 0)” error are adware and browser hijackers. Although both types of programs are considered low-risk because they do not pose a severe security threat to the system, their presence may significantly increase the security risks faced by users.

Adware apps can easily collect browsing information to bombard users with custom commercial ads. Browser hijackers may control certain browser settings to advertise sponsored websites, usually redirecting users to possible harmful pages that could be part of an online threat distribution network.

In short, if you see the “Expected Value of Line 1, Column 1 (Character 0)” error, it is highly recommended that you scan your computer system with a reputable anti-malware product to eliminate any detected threat immediately.
